2019 Varsity

10-16-19: HBHS-192 vs CDM HS-266

The varsity took on Corona del Mar HS at the beautiful Newport Beach Country Club in its final league match of the 2019 season.  The results were spectacular as the Oilers came away with a 192-266 victory!  It was an emotional (and I do mean emotional) victory as this match marked the end of the high school matches for Vanessa Betancourt, Kaitlin Tsukamoto, Kaitlyn Lam and Amy Zeng. Going out with a bang was Vanessa as today’s medalist with a score of 34!  Kaitlin followed with a 36, Chloe Griffith 38, Keely Tang 40 and Kaitlyn Lam 44.  In a non-counting round, Stella Daniels turned in an excellent score of 38! Even though Amy could not play in the match today due to her school obligations, she showed her support for the team by arriving at the 9th hole as the girls were finishing their rounds—great teammate Amy!  Way to finish strong varsity!!  Now it’s on to post-season play!

10-15-19: HBHS-204 vs Los Al HS-208

The Varsity girls played their last home match of the season, so naturally, it was senior day!  The seniors came through big time and led the Oilers to a dramatic 204-208 victory! Vanessa Betancourt and Kaitlin Tsukamoto shot even par rounds of 36 under very windy and chilly conditions to take co-medalist honors. What a great way for those two to end their stellar careers at SeaCliff!  Seniors Amy Zeng and Kaitlyn Lam also finished up their careers at SeaCliff by shooting rounds of 43 and 46, respectively.  Congrats to all 4 seniors who have been in the HBHS girls golf program for all 4 years!!

10-10-19: HBHS-200 vs Fountain Valley HS-197

The varsity girls took on a very talented Barons team at SeaCliff Country Club and came up just 3 strokes short, losing a tough one at home by the score of 200-197.  As mentioned in earlier notices, this is the difficult part of our schedule. The Surf League contains 3 (includes the Oilers of course) of the most talented teams in all of Orange County, so by playing against these teams and playing them tough, we will only benefit by the experiences in the future.  Oiler medalist was Vanessa Betancourt with a 37, followed closely by junior Keely Tang and senior Kaitlin Tsukamoto with scores of 38 and 39, respectively.  Rounding out the scoring:  Chloe Aala with a 41 and Chloe Griffith with a 45.  Time to regroup and get ready for the last week of the regular season!

10-08-19: HBHS-193 vs CDM HS-302

The varsity girls took on a very young Corona del Mar team today at SeaCliff CC showing their power, defeating the Sea Kings by a score of 193-302, a difference of 109 strokes!  The Oiler’s team total of 193 ties the school team record at SeaCliff for 9 holes.  Individually, the Oilers were led by Vanessa Betancourt, setting a new course record at SeaCliff with a spectacular score of 2 under par 34!  Vanessa’s 9 hole score featured 4 birdies which is a school record for most birdies in a 9 hole match, breaking her own record of 3!  Other excellent scores contributing to the team total were: Keely Tang 37, Kaitlin Tsukamoto 39, Stella Daniels 41 and Chloe Griffith 42.  Excellent victory today ladies!

10-03-19: HBHS-200 vs Los Al HS-196

The varsity team traveled to El Dorado GC in Long Beach for any early 2:00pm start.  This was the end of a long, tough week for the varsity team. The Oilers once again got spectacular play from senior Vanessa Betancourt as she fired a 3 under par 33, beating everyone else in the field from both teams by at least 4 shots.  However, the rest of the girls struggled a little bit, and in the end, the Griffins handed the Oilers their first defeat of the season by a score of 200-196.  Following medalist Vanessa were Kaitlin Tsukamoto and Chloe Griffith with scores of 40 each, Keely Tang 41 and Stella Daniels 46.  The heart of the schedule remains so it is time to regroup and get ready for next week.

10-01-19: HBHS-195 vs Edison HS-197

Today at SeaCliff Country Club, the varsity girls had another epic battle, this time against rival Edison HS.  The Oilers got off to a rocky start with a little bit of pre-match chaos but were able to settle in to the competition.  Edison is a very, very good young team so the competition was fierce, but always friendly with these girls.  The Oilers prevailed by a score of 195-197, our second consecutive 2 stroke victory. Medalist for the Oilers again was Vanessa Betancourt with a score of 37.  All of our counting scores from there on were one stroke apart from each other-- Chloe Griffith 38, Kaitlin Tsukamoto 39, Keely Tang 40, and Stella Daniels 41.  Way to hang in there girls—it was truly a tough day with multiple distractions!

9-30-19: HB Varsity at Long Beach Wilson Invitational

The varsity girls again had to rise before dawn for a 5:00 am a departure for the Long Beach Wilson Invitational tournament at Recreation Park!  The format for this tournament is a college format in that the score is a 5 players to count 4 scores team competition over 18 holes.  In order to get everybody to play in the tournament, we took 6 players, one of whom played as an individual.  The team placed 7th overall out of 24 teams, but again within a few strokes of the team leaders.  Vanessa Betancourt placed 6th individually out of a total of 128 players shooting an even par round of 74.  Kaitlin Tsukamoto with a 79 finished in 24th spot while Keely Tang and Chloe Griffith tied for 45th place with matching scores of 83.  Stella Daniels finished in 59th spot while Chloe Aala was 66th.  Really, a good showing by all the girls!

9-26-19: HBHS-183 vs Fountain Valley HS-185

Congrats to the varsity girls golf team as they defeated a very, very good Fountain Valley team by the score of 183-185 in the Surf League opener at Mile Square Golf Club!  It was a nail-biter and the result was not determined until the very last hole for the last group.  For the second time this season, the girls broke the school record for a team score in a 9 hole match.  The score of 183 was 4 shots better than the previous record set earlier this year!  The team was led by Vanessa Betancourt with a 3 under par score of 33 which ties her own school records for the lowest 9 hole score overall and the lowest 9 holes at Mile Square GC.  Her 3 birdies also ties her own school record for a 9 hole match.  Playing alongside Vanessa was freshman Chloe Griffith who shot her own personal best of 2 under par 34.  Her 3 birdies also ties the school record.  Other excellent scores who are now part of the school record for the team score included Kaitlin Tsukamoto 37, Keely Tang 39 and Chloe Aala/Amy Zeng 40.
Well done girls!!

9-23-19:  HB Varsity at Rainbow Sandals Invitational

The varsity girls had an early wakeup call yesterday morning as we departed HBHS at 4:40am to head to San Clemente for the Rainbow Sandals Invitational.  This tournament featured 20 teams from all around Southern California.  The venue was the very tough par 73 San Clemente Municipal Golf Course.  Vanessa Betancourt, coming off of a 6th place finish in a Toyota Tour Cup 36 hole event in Indian Wells over the weekend against an elite field, again finished 6th in this tournament out of a field of 120 players shooting an excellent score of 75! Keely Tang also had an excellent round of 78! The team finished in 6th place with a team score of 419 for the 5 counting scores.  The team score was 8 shots out of second place, so it is a pattern that we are very close to having outstanding results.  These experiences will serve us well in the future!
Keep up the great work girls!

9-17-19: HBHS-199 vs Marina HS-245

The varsity team took on the Vikings of Marina HS at SeaCliff CC yesterday afternoon.  On a track that was playing long and difficult, the Oilers managed to handle the conditions quite well, taking down Marina by a score of 199-245. Vanessa Betancourt again showed the way with a fabulous score of even par 36!  Right behind Vanessa was Chloe Griffith with a great score of 38!  Other scores contributing to the winning total were Kaitlin Tsukamoto 41, Keely Tang 42 and Amy Zeng 42.  This victory runs our official season record to 6-0!!

9-12-19: HBHS-172 vs Laguna Beach HS-227

Varsity traveled to Ben Browns GC in Laguna Beach to take on the Breakers on this par 32 course, defeating Laguna Beach by a score of 172-227.  This short course helped our girls hone their short game skills as there were many short par 3’s and driveable par 4’s. Strategy was the key.  Vanessa Betancourt led the way with a 3 under par score of 29!  Other contributing scores were Keely Tang 34, Kaitlin Tsukamoto 35, Chloe Griffith 36 and Chloe Aala 38.  Next Tuesday we will be back at home at SeaCliff, a much more challenging layout.

9-3-19: HBHS-189 vs Newport Harbor HS-212

The varsity girls traveled to Costa Mesa Golf Club to take on Newport Harbor HS in a non league match.  While the Oilers got off to a rather sluggish start, they definitely finished up strong, taking the match by a score of 189-212.  Our winning score was just 2 shots off our school record set earlier this year.  For the first time ever, we had 5 girls with scores in the 30’s on this par 35 layout.  Leading the way was our medalist, Vanessa Betancourt with a 36.  Our 3 super freshmen, Chloe Aala, Stella Daniels and Chloe Griffith,  all came in with scores of 38!  And, Kaitlyn Lam rounded out the scoring with a 39.  Chloe A, Stella and Kaitlyn each had their low rounds of the year so far.  Varsity remains undefeated on the season and hope to add to the win column tomorrow against Laguna Beach HS. Excellent playing girls!!

9-6-19 & 9-7-19: HB Varsity at Chappy Wheeler/Palm Desert

The varsity girls were at it again this weekend when they ventured to Palm Desert for the 2019 Chappy Wheeler/ Palm Desert Invitational.  While the weather was hot (111 degrees), the scores were even hotter!  The girls finished in 4th place just behind some of the best high school teams anywhere.  First place was taken by Diamond Bar High School, a team that vies for the California State Championship every year.  Our HBHS girls finished 12 strokes behind Diamond Bar which equates to 1 shot per player per day.  Dare I say…..EVERY STROKE MATTERS!  But this shows that we are competing with the very, very good teams.  Also finishing just ahead of HBHS were The Harker School, a private school from San Jose, and Bishop Gorman High School from Las Vegas, a national super sports powerhouse.
It is hard to know where to begin, but I guess we should start with the first round on Friday afternoon at The Lakes Country Club.  The first round team score of 392 was just 3 strokes short of the all time school record for 18 holes!  The tournament format called for counting 5 scores out of the 6 girls making up the team.  Vanessa Betancourt led the way with a score of 75, followed by Chloe Griffith 76, Kaitlin Tsukamoto 79, Keely Tang 80, Chloe Aala 82 and Stella Daniels 88—all excellent scores!
But Friday was just the beginning.  Saturday morning, the girls were ready to go when they arrived at The Springs Country Club.

Starting at 8:00am, the weather was a little more tolerable for at least the first half of the long 5 hour round.  Playing some of the best team golf that HBHS has ever seen, the girls shattered the 18 hole scoring record by shooting a score of 375!! Leading the way on this record setting round was Kaitlin Tsukamoto with a one under par score of 71!  Right behind her at even par was Vanessa Betancourt with a 72 followed by Keely Tang 74, Chloe Griffith 75, Chloe Aala 83 and Stella Daniels 87.  Just an awesome display girls!
So, our two day total for this tournament was 767.  That score is 122 strokes better than the two day team score from last year!!

9-3-19: HBHS-205 vs Glendora HS-235
The varsity girls took on the Tartans from Glendora HS this afternoon at SeaCliff CC and came away with a 205-235 victory!  That runs the official varsity record to 3-0 plus a scrimmage victory, so I’m calling it 4-0!  Today’s medalist was Kaitlin Tsukamoto with a score of 39!  She was followed by other contributing scores of 40 from Keely Tang, Chloe Aala 41, Vanessa Betancourt 42, and Chloe Griffith 43.

8-27-19: HBHS-197 vs LB Wilson-214

The varsity girls took on Long Beach Wilson again today, this time at SeaCliff Country Club. And again, the Oilers came away victorious by a score of 197-214!  Freshman Chloe Griffith emerged as the medalist with a score of 38, followed closely by Keely Tang and Kaitlin Tsukamoto with 39’s. We are off to a strong start this season, but there is lots of work to be done.

8-26-19: HBHS-206 vs LB Wilson-210

Varsity took on Long Beach Wilson at Big Rec Park yesterday afternoon.  It was a battle, but the Oilers prevailed by a score of 206-210! Vanessa Betancourt and Keely Tang were co-medalsits for the Oilers with scores of 39 on the par 38 track.  Other contributing scores to the team total were Kaitlin Tsukamoto 42 and  Chloe Griffith and Chloe Aala with matching scores of 43.

8-21-19: HBHS-187 vs Edison HS-200

The varsity team kicked off its season against a strong Edison HS team in a scrimmage this afternoon at Mile Square Golf Club.  And, what a spectacular start to the season it was!  The girls smashed our previous school record by a whopping 6 strokes by shooting a 187 (best 5 scores), eclipsing the previous record of 193!  What a way to start the season!!  The girls were led by last year’s Surf League MVP, Vanessa Betancourt, with a score of 35 (1 under par)!  Following right behind were Keely Tang with a 36 and Kaitlin Tsukamoto with a 37. Our freshmen were awesome today as well.  Chloe Griffith shot a 38 followed closely by Stella Daniels and Chloe Aala with scores of 41 each.
We are off to a great start, but there is lots of work ahead of us!  Keep up the great work girls!!
