8/23/22

The Varsity and JV teams began their seasons today; Varsity against Long Beach Wilson at The Huntington Club and JV versus Westminster HS at Meadowlark.  Both teams came away victorious in their openers.

Varsity downed the LB Wilson Bears by a score of 209-229.  The girls had to overcome Wilson’s best player who shot a 2 under par score of 34!  As for the Oilers, Chloe Griffith set the pace with a score of 39!  The rest of the 5 counting scores were very strong for an opening match, particularly at the recently renovated The Huntington Club.  Annika Wang came in with a 41, followed by Chloe Aala and Samantha Trani with 42s and freshman Sophie Thibodeau’s 45 rounded out the scoring.

As for the JV team, they trounced the Westminster team by a score of 232-261. Medalist for the Oilers was Briana Lee with a score of 44.  She was followed closely by freshman Chloe Kumpis with a 45, Morgan Drotter 47, freshman Megan Romero 47 and Kayla Bui 49.

8/25/22 - A rip-roaring start!

JV traveled to Tijeras Creek Golf Club, a long and difficult track, for a non-league match against Santa Margarita HS. Santa Margarita traditionally has one of the strongest teams, both varsity and JV in all of Orange County.  So the home team took advantage of their home course to score a 207-229 victory over the Oilers.  Low scores for HB included Megan Romero with a round of 40.  Three other girls had scores in the 40’s:  Kayla Bui 44, Lizzie Rodriguez 46 and Chloe Kumpis 48. We are looking forward to our return match when Santa Margarita travels to Meadowlark on 9/6.

8/29/22 - SWEEP!

The Varsity and JV teams both traveled to Recreation Park to take on the Long Beach Wilson Bruins and both came away with road victories! Varsity bested the Bruins by a score of 212-224 for its first road victory of the season at Big Rec, a par 38 track.  Highlights today included a sparkling 1 under par round of 37 turned in by Chloe Griffith!  Also, our first EAGLE of the year was landed by Chloe Aala on the par 5 7th hole.  Two super shots left her with a 10 foot putt which she drained!  Counting scores today:  Chloe Griffith 37, Annika Wang 40, Samantha Trani 42, Chloe Aala 43 and Ady Ginter 50.

Meanwhile, over at Little Rec, the JV team took it to the Bruins, claiming a 208-254 victory!  The track at Little Rec is a par 31 course.  Medalist for the day was freshman Chloe Kumpis with a score of 39! Following Chloe were fellow freshmen Abbi Kerwin 41, Megan Romero 42 and Lizzie Rodriguez 42, as well as sophomores Nevada McNeil and Kayla Bui with 44’s. The LB Wilson Bruins will be looking for revenge as they travel to Meadowlark for a rematch tomorrow afternoon.

8/30/22--SWEEP 2.0

All 3 teams were in action and all 3 teams were victorious!
Varsity took on the perennial powerhouse Mater Dei Monarchs at The Huntington Club. The girls played the back 9 holes instead of the usual front side as it was closed due to sprinkler renovation. So, a little out of the comfort zone, the HB girls rose to the occasion to pull out a 203-208 victory under very windy conditions.  Medalist for the day was star senior leader Chloe Griffith with an even par round of 36!  Another fine round was turned in by Annika Wang, who shot a stellar 39.  Three other great scores rounded out the counters: Samantha Trani 41, Sara Minsky 43 and Chloe Aala 44.  Varsity improves its record to 3-0 on the season. Great playing ladies!

Meanwhile, the JV team completed its home and home competition with Long Beach Wilson by hosting the Bruins at Meadowlark Golf Club. For the second time in as many days, Chloe Kumpis was the medalist, turning in a great score of 41 to lead the Oilers. Chloe was followed by several more great scores: Briana Lee 43, Nevada McNeil 45, Megan Romero 46 and Aleyna Doche 46. Final score:  HB 221, Wilson 263.

Playing directly behind the JV match at Meadowlark, the Frosh/Soph team made its 2022 debut by beating the cross town rival Edison Chargers by a score of 180-191.  Many of these girls were playing in their first ever high school match so the nerves were tested.  F/S played the first 6 holes at Meadowlark as their course, hence the scoring.  Medalist for the day was Chloe Siok, turning in a round of 33!  All of the other counting scores were also in the 30’s as follows:  Karina Shehadeh 35, Rylee Stern 36, Lauren Cartee 38 and Maile Nichols 38.  Nice start to your season girls!

9/6/22

Varsity took on Santa Margarita High School, a perennial powerhouse and a legitimate contender for this year’s state championship.  It was an excellent opportunity to compare ourselves to a great team.  The Oilers played exceptionally well, recording their best team score of the season, a dazzling 197!  However, it was not quite good enough as the Oilers lost to Santa Margarita by a score of 189-197.  The Oiler Medalist for today, with a score of 1 under par 35, was Chloe Griffith, our senior leader who has been playing the best golf of her 4 year career!  Rounding out the scoring with excellent rounds of their own were: Annika Wang 39, Samantha Trani 40, Sophie Thidodeau 41 (her best round) and Chloe Aala 42.  Congrats girls on a match well played!

The JV team completed its home and home by hosting Santa Margarita's JV’s.  As you may remember, the Oilers took a tough loss against Santa Margarita at Tijeras Creek GC last week, but returned the favor by beating the Eagles on home turf by a score of 222-234.  Leading the way for the Oilers was Abbi Kerwin with a score of 43.  She was followed closely by Chloe Kumpis 44, and Nevada McNeil, Torie Rudd and Megan Romero, each with a score of 45. Well done, ladies!

Also playing at Meadowlark this afternoon was the Frosh/Soph team, taking on the Monarchs of Mater Dei. This group played on a par 25, 6 hole track. Unfortunately, the Oilers went down to defeat at the hands of Mater Dei by a score of 166-183. Bright spots for the Oilers were Co- Medalists Lauren Cartee and Chloe Siok with rounds of 33 each. Also, figuring in the scoring total were:  Ayla Bickel 37, Maile Nichols 40 and Karina Shehadeh 40. The Oilers are looking forward to the rematch happening early next month.

9/7/22

JV Oilers traveled to Brea to take on the Troy HS team in a JV match at Brea Creek Golf Club.  Dealing with the stifling heat, the girls gave it a valiant effort but came up a few strokes short, losing by a score of 200-205. The girls were treated very well by the Troy team as they provided egg rolls, chicken wings and Gatorade!
Co-Medalists for the Oilers were Briana Lee and Chloe Kumpis with matching scores of 38.  The team scoring also included:  Megan Romero 41, Kayla Bui 43 and Aleyna Doche/Izzy Stinson 45. Congrats, girls, on giving it your all and dealing with the difficult conditions!

9/8/22

Varsity traveled to Coto de Caza Golf Club in Trabuco Canyon for a rematch with Santa Margarita Catholic HS, this time on the Eagles home course.  While we played them tough on our home course, the Oilers were just a bit overmatched on the away course. Remember that SMCHS is one of the best teams in the state.  The Eagles shot a team score of 178 which included scores of 32, 35, 36, 36 and 39 on a tough par 36 track.  So, as a group, they shot 2 under par!

The Oilers played hard in very warm and at times windy conditions on a course with which they were unfamiliar. Final score: SMCHS 178, HB 211. Medalist for the Oilers was, once again, Chloe Griffith with a score of 38.  Other counting scores were turned in by Chloe Aala 41, Samantha Trani and Annika Wang with 43’s and Sophie Thibodeau 46.

Wild Times in Rancho Mirage 9/9/22-9/10/22

The girls arrived at The Springs Country Club for the Chappy Wheeler Invitational for a 2 day tournament.  Up until Friday, temperatures had been in the upper 100’s.  Friday brought a break in the heat wave as temperatures dipped to the low 90’s.  Most of the day, the round was played under overcast skies with quite welcome light rain.  That was until the sideways, cold and very wet deluge hit.  Everybody got absolutely soaked and as the greens become unputtable due to standing water, the girls were called off the course for the day (most of the players still had several holes to play). The next day, the course miraculously dried out and play resumed.

While the Oilers generally did not play up to their best, the team still managed a 4th place finish behind Bishop Gorman HS from Las Vegas, Orange Lutheran and Diamond Bar.  While the first round team total score was a respectable 399 for 5 scores, the play faltered in today’s round as the girls could only manage a collective 429.

The bright spot - Chloe Griffith took the overall individual title over all other players in the field with a 1 over par two-day total of 145 (73, 72). Oiler Proud, Chloe! Way to go!!

9/13/22

The Varsity girls were hosted by the Marina Vikings yesterday afternoon at Meadowlark Golf Club.  Fully recovered from the wild weekend in Rancho Mirage, the girls took care of business, beating Marina 190-221. Once again, the Oilers were led by senior Chloe Griffith, shooting a 1 under par 35. Other strong counting scoring: Chloe Aala 37, Annika Wang 37, Samantha Trani 38 and Sara Minsky 43. Way to go, girls!

Meanwhile, the JV girls were the home team, hosting Marina at Meadowlark.  Also taking care of their business, the JV Oilers downed the Vikings by a blowout score of 138-200 (playing the first 6 holes only, at the request of the Marina coaches). All of the counting scores were very tightly clustered, showing great depth on this team. Medalist for the day was Abbi Kerwin with a score of 1 over par 26.  She was followed closely by: Lizzie Rodriguez 27, Chloe Kumpis 28, Aleyna Doche 28 and Megan Romero 29.  Way to play, girls!

9/15/22

Congratulations to Samantha Trani for her career best as a Varsity player!  She handled the toughened up The Huntington Club course with a score of 1 over par 37!  For the first time this year, we have Co-Medalists as Samantha and Chloe Griffith each turned in matching 37’s.  The Oilers managed to hand the Sailors of Newport Harbor a solid performance, defeating them by a score of 210-243, running the season record to 5-2.  Other contributing scores:  Annika Wang 43, Torie Rudd 46 and Chloe Aala 47. Congrats to the girls on a great win!

9/20/22

A nasty wind kicked up at THC as the Varsity Oilers pounded CDM by a score of 215-258. The girls handled the windy conditions extremely well, especially senior leader Chloe Griffith who managed a one over par round of 37 to take Medalist honors, again.  Birdies on 2 holes helped Chloe Aala to a second spot with a score of 42. Rounding out the scoring: Samantha Trani 44, Sara Minsky 45 and Torie Rudd 47.  Way to persevere, girls!

Meanwhile, over at DL Baker in Fountain Valley, the Frosh/Soph team took on the Edison Chargers in the second of 4 matches this season. Traveling for the first time this season, the Oilers struggled a little bit, losing a close one, 236-247. They will get another chance next week as they will again travel to DL Baker.  At Baker, the girls play 9 holes instead of the 6 hole track that they usually play at Meadowlark. Co-Medalists for the Oilers were Lauren Cartee and Rylee Stern with matching scores of 47. The remaining counting scores, all 51’s were turned in by Maile Nichols, Karina Shehadeh and Chloe Siok.  Good job, girls!

JV Results from 9/21/22

The JV team took on Troy HS at Meadowlark in the back end of a home-and-home contest.  Since Troy was only able to bring 5 girls, the Oilers agreed to match up with 5.  Unfortunately, the Oilers came up a bit short and were defeated by Troy 229-237. For the second day in a row, the conditions were very windy. Fine play was turned in by Medalist Chloe Kumpis with an exceptional score of 40! Completing the scoring: Megan Romero 46, Amelia Nguyen 46, Kayla Bui 51 and Abbi Kerwin 54.

9/22/22 - Varsity

In the finale to our play against the Wave League, the Varsity girls traveled to Ben Browns Golf Club, a quaint par 32 track in Laguna Canyon just off PCH in Laguna Beach.  It is a short track, but shots still need to be made in order to score.  And score, the Oilers did!  Every one of the 8 girls playing today had a score in the 30’s, soundly defeating Laguna Beach HS by a score of 161-223. Medalist for the day was Chloe Griffith, this time with a 2 under par 30. Annika Wang was close behind with a 1 under par 31. Chloe Aala was even par at 32 and Samantha Trani was 1 over par 33. Rounding out the 5 counting scores was Sophie Thibodeau with a 35. It should be noted that the other girls all had excellent scores as well: Briana Lee 36, Torie Rudd 37 and Ady Ginter 38.  Collectively, this was the best scoring of the year relative to par. Way to go, girls! Now on to Surf League.

9/26/22 - Murphy Invitational

Varsity headed to Temecula for the Murphy Invitational tournament hosted by Great Oaks HS. The tournament was played on the golf course at Temecula Creek Inn. Starting temperature was around 100 degrees, but a nice breeze kicked up and cooled things off during the course of a 6 hour plus round for the 18 holes. The Oilers hung in there, as they seem to always do at this tournament, landing the second consecutive 2nd place finish at this event, bettered only by perennial powerhouse Diamond Bar HS.

Medalist at this event for the Oilers was sophomore Annika Wang with an outstanding score of 76! Following Annika: Chloe Griffith 77, Chloe Aala 82, Samantha Trani 83 and Sara Minsky 93 for a total team score of 411. Note that Diamond Bar’s team score was 401, so we were very respectable against a very good team. Way to go, Oilers!

9/26/22

JV took on Corona del Mar at Newport Beach Golf Course.  CDM was completely outmatched as the Oilers walked away with a 201-251 victory!  Chloe Kumpis was the star of the day with an excellent score of 34. Amelia Nguyen also turned in a great score of 38. They were followed by a cluster of scores: Megan Romero 40, Nevada McNeil 42, Izzy Stinson 42, Aleyna Doche 43 and Ayla Bickel 48. Congrats, ladies!

Meanwhile, the Frosh/Soph team had a tough loss over at DL Baker against Edison, with the Chargers managing to squeak out a win over the Oilers by a score of 245-253. Tri-Medalists were Lauren Cartee, Chloe Siok and Rylee Stern all with scores of 48. The other two counting scores were Sophie Kim 54 and Maile Nichols 55.

9/27/22 - Surf League Opener

Kicking off Surf League play today by tying the fifth best team scoring record in school history, the Varsity Oilers took care of business at The Huntington Club, surprising the Barons of Fountain Valley with a score of 193-201. This 193 total ties the best team score ever at The Huntington Club. And there were a couple of career bests at THC today: Samantha Trani, who just had a career best a week or so ago, bettered that with an even par round of 36 today.  Briana Lee also checked in with a career best 43 to help the team. Co-medalists were Samantha Trani and Chloe Griffith with matching 36’s; Annika Wang 37, Chloe Aala 41 and Briana Lee 43 rounded out the team score.

Meanwhile, over at DL Baker, the Oiler JV team snatched a road victory from Fountain Valley, downing them by a score of 196-214. Illness and injury seem to be running through the JV team, but they pulled together to find a way to win. Congratulations to Co-Medalists Chloe Kumpis and Megan Romero with great scores of 35 each. Kayla Bui also had an excellent sub-40 score of 39. Rounding out the counting scores for the Oilers: Amelia Nguyen 43 and Aleyna Doche 44.

9/29/22

All three teams saw action yesterday taking on Los Alamitos HS. Following a record-tying performance on Tuesday at THC, Varsity came out flat against a powerful Los Al team. The first hole was disastrous for the Oilers and they could not recover, losing by a score of 189-212.

Meanwhile over at Meadowlark, the JV team hosted the Griffins in a thriller, pulling out a 222-223 victory! The Oilers took the victory in walk-off fashion as Lizzie Rodriguez holed out from the rough on the 9th hole for the 1 stroke win! Co-Medalists for the day were Ady Ginter and Chloe Kumpis with matching scores of 43. Megan Romero followed closely with a score of 44, and Kayla Bui and Lizzie Rodriguez rounded out the counting scores with 46’s. Congrats to the whole team and a special nod to Lizzie!

Frosh/Soph also took on the Griffins, beating them by a score of 182-189 in a 6-hole match at Meadowlark. While the win didn’t feature the dramatics that the JV match did, it did feature solid, consistent scoring all the way through the lineup. Medalist for the Oilers was Chloe Siok with a score of 33.  Following behind her were:  Rylee Stern 36, Karina Shehadeh 37, and Maile Nichols and Lauren Cartee with 38’s.  Well done, ladies!

10/3/22

Frosh/Soph took on the Monarchs from Mater Dei HS at DL Baker Golf Club, winning by a score of 212-223. It was another frozen yogurt day as the girls now have back to back wins and have evened the season record to 3-3. Medalist for the day was Morgan Drotter with a score of 41. With tight scoring, the remaining counting scores were:  Lauren Cartee 42, Ayla Bickel 43, Chloe Siok 43 and Rylee Stern 43.

10/4/22 - Road Warriors

Turns out the Oilers are a bunch of road warriors. Both Varsity and JV took on Edison HS at Costa Mesa’s Mesa Linda course, and DL Baker, respectively. At Mesa Linda, Varsity took down the Chargers by a score of 200-211 running the season record to 9-3. Team Chloe led the pack: Griffith as the medalist with an even par 35 and Aala with a 39! Steady Samantha Trani shot a 41 while freshman Sophie Thibodeau had one of her best rounds of the season with a 42. Rounding out the scoring was Briana Lee, who has been playing very well of late, with a 43. Halfway through the Surf League season, the Oilers are tied for first place with Los Alamitos.

Meanwhile, over at DL Baker, JV beat the JV Chargers by a score of 203-222. The JV season record is the same as Varsity’s: 9-3. Leading the way once again for the Oilers was Chloe Kumpis with a score of 38.  Again JV featured consistent scoring as the remaining counting scores were: Ady Ginter 39, Aleyna Doche 40, Kayla Bui 43 and Megan Romero 43.

JV Results 10/5/22

Upping the season record to 10-3 and defending the home course, the JV team soundly defeated Fountain Valley yesterday afternoon by a score of 228-255 at Meadowlark Golf Club.  It was a long day as there were several schools playing matches at Meadowlark, so patience was the name of the game. Medalist Megan Romero came in with a great score of 41! Backing her up were teammates Chloe Kumpis 45, Lizzie Rodriguez 45, Aleyna Doche 48, and Ady Ginter 49.  Great playing, Oilers!

10/6/22 Varsity vs Fountain Valley

The Varsity team traveled to Mile Square to take on the Barons of Fountain Valley at their home course. In an epic battle, the Oilers came away with a 188-195 victory. The results had us scrambling to check the record books as the 188 team score for 9 holes was the 3rd best in school history!  Led by Chloe Griffith’s continued outstanding play, the Oilers ran the season record to 10-3 and the Surf League record to 3-1, beating the 2021 league champion Barons in both ends of this year’s home and home matchups.

Medalist was Chloe Griffith, shooting a 3 under par 33. Her playing partner for this match, Samantha Trani continued her recent stellar play by recording an even par 36.  Also turning in excellent scores were Chloe Aala and Annika Wang with scores of 39 each and Sophie Thibodeau with a 41.

10/10/22 Varsity vs Mater Dei

Varsity took on the Monarchs from Mater Dei at their home course in a non-league match at the difficult and quirky Santa Ana Country Club. Chloe Griffith continued her fabulous play this season by recording a 3 under par 33 to take Medalist honors. Chloe’s round featured a hole out on the very first hole for an eagle!  Sadly, the team could not take the match, losing by a score of 203-212. Other counting scores today were  Annika Wang 42, Samantha Trani 43, Ady Ginter 47 and Sophie Thibodeau 47.

10/11/22 Varsity vs Los Alamitos

Battling nature and a team of 5 players who collectively shot a score of 181 (that is one stroke over par) over at Old Ranch Country Club, the Oilers lost to Los Alamitos HS, 181-196. Chloe Griffith set the pace for the Oilers by shooting a 2 under par score of 34, settling a personal grudge match with the course at Old Ranch. Backing up Chloe was the other half of Team Chloe (Aala that is), who shot an outstanding score of 38. Other counting scores for the day were Samantha Trani 40, Annika Wang 41 and Sophie Thibodeau/Briana Lee with matching scores of 43.

JV and F/S Results from 10/11 and 10/12

In matches against Los Alamitos HS, both JV and F/S matches were suspended and subsequently canceled as the golf course staff at Navy Cruiser pulled players off the course due to lightning in the area. Both matches were suspended mid-round and will not be replayed.

Frosh/Soph was able to complete a match the following day against Long Beach Wilson at Little Rec, but unfortunately lost by a score of 229-245. Medalist for the day was Morgan Drotter with a score of 43, and the remaining counting scores were: Rylee Stern 49, Lauren Cartee 50, Ayla Bickel 51 and Chloe Siok 52.

10/13/22 Last day of Dual Matches

All 3 teams were in action and at our home courses to complete our dual match season. On Senior Day at The Huntington Club, the varsity team completed its season sweep of the Edison Chargers by a score of 197-211, resulting in a second place finish for the Oilers in the Surf League, topped only by a very strong Los Alamitos team. Medalist for the day was Samantha Trani with an outstanding score of 37. Annika Wang, Sam’s playing partner for the day, shot a great score of 38. The remaining counting scores were:  Chloe Griffith 40, Chloe Aala 40 and Sophie Thibodeau 42.  It should be noted that everyone played well: Briana Lee 44, Sara Minsky 45 and Torie Rudd 46. It was an emotional day for everyone as we say goodbye to our seniors Chloe Aala, Chloe Griffith, Sara Minsky and Torie Rudd. We will miss our beloved seniors, who formed the heart of one of the most successful teams in school history. Thanks to all of you for your hard work and dedication to the program!!

Senior Day 2022: Victory over Edison with a rare sub-200 team round at The Huntington Club, 197-211.

Meanwhile, over at Meadowlark, things were a little chaotic with 32 girls playing in matches (16 JV and 16 FS).  While scores were a little higher than usual, the Oilers still took down the Chargers, 236-261. Medalist for the day was Chloe Kumpis with a score of 44. Chloe was followed by the remaining counting scores:  Lizzie Rodriguez 47, Abbi Kerwin 48, Aleyna Doche 48 and Kayla Bui 49. 10/19/22 Surf League Tournament Final Round

Chloe Griffith finished in 3rd place in the final round of the Surf League tournament, earning a bronze medal, against arguably the strongest league field in all of Orange County. Samantha Trani finished tied for 10th place, but unfortunately only the top 9 go on to compete in the CIF Southern Section Individual tournament next week back at Los Serranos.

Chloe Griffith earned first team all-league honors again this year, while Samantha Trani and Chloe Aala earned second team all-league honors. Congrats to Chloe G, Samantha and Chloe A!
