Week of 10/16/23

Monday & Tuesday

It was another great week for the Oilers.  Things started off Monday with Varsity at Los Serranos GC for the Individual Sunset Conference matches. Of our seven players, four made it to the second day - Kayla Nguyen, Annika Wang, Sophie Thibodeau and Samantha Trani. After day two, our team was halved to Kayla and Annika advancing - Annika with a combined score of 154 and Kayla coming in with a 157. Both Annika and Kayla move on to the CIF-SS Individual Regional tournament next week.

Thursday

JV took a long drive to Birch Hills GC for the Troy High School Jerry Cowgill Invitational, where our two teams of four dominated the field, winning everything but closest to the pin. Team 1 Kayla Bui, Megan Romero, Alexis Untalan and Anh Bui, and Team 2 Abbi Kerwin, Devonne Nguyen, Lizzie Rodriguez and Madelyn Untalan took the overall first and second place trophies, respectively. Congratulations to junior Kayla Bui who shot an even par 30, taking the 1st place individual and long drive trophies. Abbi Kerwin took home 2nd place low score with a 31, while Devonne Nguyen won 2nd low gross by a card off against our own Megan Romero, both shooting 32. Overall team scores were 137 and 139 besting the next lowest team (Diamond Bar) by six strokes. Way to close out a terrific season, girls!

Week of 10/9/23

All three teams secured Surf League titles this week! Varsity tied with Los Alamitos for first, and both JV and Frosh/Soph were undefeated in league play to finish atop the podium in Sunset Surf team play.  Great job, girls!

Tuesday

JV started things off against Fountain Valley at David L Baker.  Fountain Valley. Our three player score was 109 to 151 with Chloe Kumpis as our medalist with a 35. We had three 37’s coming from Aleyna Doche, Megan Romero and Devonne Nguyen (Devonne with three birdies in a row!). Of note, six of our eight players came in under 40, including Kayla Bui with a 38, for a 5 score total of 184…wow!

Wednesday

The Varsity match also against Fountain Valley was a little closer. Meadowlark's aerated greens and stolen balls generated some frustration, but we worked through it for the win, 198 to 209.  Marina Kelly, a first time medalist for the day with an excellent 1 over 37. Nicely done! Kayla Nguyen came in with a 39, Annika Wang at 40, while Briana Lee and Bella Greene rounded it out our scores, both with 41’s.

Thursday

Both Varsity and JV were at it against Marina, at Meadowlark and Navy courses, respectively. Marina gave it everything they had, but it wasn’t enough as our Oilers stomped the competition. Due to The Huntington Club closure, Varsity played at Meadowlark where Annika was our medalist shooting a 37, with Kayla Nguyen on her heels at 38. Bella Green shot a nice 40, while Samantha Trani and Sophie Thibodeau both finished things off with 42’s. Varsity took the match, 199-237.

We also celebrated our seniors! Newcomer Bella Greene, Aleyna Doche (two years with the program), this year's team manager Isabella Stinson (three years with the program), Briana Lee (four years with the program), and four year Varsity golfer/two year captain Samantha Trani.

Meanwhile, JV made quick work of the competition with four scores going against Marina’s shortened team, winning 150 to 220.  Our five low scores totaled 187 with all five scores in the 30’s. Alexis Untalan was our medalist of the day with a 2 over 34.  A pair of birdies helped her out along with a drive on #9 that came to a stop a bit past the green on a 280 yard hole…the cart path may have helped a little! Stellar play, Alexis.  Other scores included Kayla Bui 37, Megan Romero 38 and a pair of 39’s from Abbi Kerwin and Madelyn Untalan.

Week of 10/2/23

Monday

Varsity hit the road early again for a tournament - this time the Ayala Classic at Western Hills CC in Chino Hills, finishing 4th out of 20 teams. Kayla Nguyen posted low for the Oilers, with an 18-hole score of 81. Nice job, girls!

Tuesday

The Oilers were in top form Tuesday, taking on Marina’s Varsity and JV teams at Meadowlark. Scores probably would have been lower, as the greens were aerated the day prior and looked more like the beach. Our Varsity players made quick work of Marina’s best with a 203 to 240 victory. Medalist was Kayla Nguyen with a stellar one-under 35, posting two birdies in a row on holes 3 and 4. Samantha Trani was next in line with a 41, followed by Marina Kelly 42, Annika Wang 42, Bella Green 43. Special mention goes to Sophie Thibodeau who just missed a 12 foot eagle putt after a gutsy drive onto the green on #8. Yep she tapped the bird in!

Also at Meadowlark, our JV players took the win, 144 to 187. Marina’s JV coach suggested the teams play only 6 holes for the match, but our girls wanted to finish the front nine…that’s kind of players we have! We counted up 6 holes for the match, and our girls moved along to finish the front 9. Chloe Kumpis was both match and 9-hole medalist, posting a one-over par 26 for 6 holes; she kept the momentum going and shot a two-over par 38 for 9 holes…great job, Chloe!  The other 6 hole scores came from Aleyna Doche 29, Lizzie Rodriguez 29, Devonne Nguyen 30 and Kayla Bui 30.  Special congrats to Megan Romero for her birdie on #9, arguably the hardest hole on the course!

Thursday

After taking a win in our first meet-up against a talented Los Alamitos team, Varsity lost a very close second match on Thursday, 195-189 at Old Ranch Country Club, and the two schools are now tied for first in league play. Varsity played well, shooting their lowest combined score of the year, and medalist for the day was Kayla Nguyen with an even par 36.  Kayla continues her strong play in her quest to lead the Sunset League in individual points. Keep up the great play, Kayla. Other contributors were Sophie Thibodeau 38, Samantha Trani 39, Annika Wang 40, Briana Lee 41 and Belle Green 42.

Meanwhile, JV was in great form at Meadowlark, taking their match, also against Los Al, 216-246. Congrats to JV medalist Megan Romero 41 and other counting scores Lizzie Rodriguez 42, Anh Bui 43, Chloe Kumpis 44 and Kayla Bui 46. Four of the five 9-hole scores under 45…solid play, girls. JV remains undefeated as the program heads into our final week of league matches. Amazing job, girls!

While all three teams were supposed to compete, Los Alamitos didn’t bring their Frosh/Soph team. So Frosh/Soph wrapped their season with a winning record, 4-2.

For next week, The Huntington Club is closed and reconfigured due to ongoing trouble with the greens. The entire course is set with temporary greens, tee boxes and playing to a bit over 3,500 yards for 18 holes. It is uncertain when things will return to normal. Varsity matches will be held at Meadowlark.

Week of 9/25/23

Tuesday

Varsity took down Los Alamitos at the Huntington Club, in our first league match of the year. Kayla Nguyen was medalist with an even par 36, with Annika Wang 41, Sophie Thibodeau 44, Bella Greene 45 and Samantha Trani 46 rounding out our scores. Playing in the 8th spot, Briana Lee had a nice 40, which didn't count, but fortunately wasn't needed as the Oilers edged out Los Al, 212-214.

Meanwhile, both JV and Frosh/Soph were in action at the Navy Cruiser Course, also against Los Al. JV took their match, 202-216, with a 38 by Kayla Bui making her the day's medalist. She was followed by Anh Bui, Aleyna Doche, Megan Romero, Alexis Untalan and Madelyn Untalan, all with 41s (lowest five count). Frosh/Soph won 218-263, led by medalist Devonne Nguyen. Karina Shehadeh, Maile Nichols, Madison Trace and Keira Bolt were our other counting scores. Great job, girls!

Thursday

Varsity took another close one in their match against Fountain Valley, 197-202, at Mile Square. Samantha Trani and Kayla Nguyen co-medaled with a pair of two over 38s, followed by Annika Wang 39, while Ady Ginter, Bella Greene and Marina Kelly each had 41s (lowest five count).

JV also won their match against Fountain Valley, 87-122, with only three scores counting for six holes. Congrats to medalist Madelyn Untalan with a 28 (three over for six holes).

Week of 9/18/23

Monday

Varsity woke up at zero dark 30 to make an 8am shotgun start in the San Clemente Triton Tournament, this year an 18 hole tournament. We don’t have all the scores at press, but we do know the Oilers played well, finishing 6th out of 18 teams. Unofficially, Kayla Nguyen was our medalist with an 80. We will update official scores when we get them.

Frosh/Soph had a commanding win over Edison at David L. Baker. While we had 8 players, Edison showed up with 6. We turned in stellar scores, with Alexis Untalan’s 4-over par 35 making her medalist for the day. Other low scores were Madelyn Untalan 37, Maile Nichols 44, Madison Trace 49 and Karina Shehadeh 50, for a score of 215-257. Elaina Mack 40 and Keira Bolt 41 were paired together, both posting career lows. This would have made the score an even more emphatic 197-257, but unfortunately their scores did not count as they were not matched with Edison players.

Tuesday

Varsity played Laguna Beach at The Huntington Club with a whopping win of 212 to 285.  Our medalist was Kayla Nguyen shooting 38, followed by Ady Ginter 41, Samantha Trani 42, Annika Wang 45 and Sophie Thibodeau 46. THC has been playing tough lately with the greens recovering from a catastrophic disease. Nonetheless, great job, girls.

Frosh/Soph beat Edison again 200-236. While the results were similar, the line-up was a little different.  Anh Bui was our medalist with a chip-in birdie for 36. Madelyn Untalan 37, Alexis Untalan 39, Morgan Drotter 42 and Karina Shehadeh 46 round out the top 5.

Wednesday

JV had a go at Edison playing Mile Square Park. While the course is a long par 36, the Oilers dominated with a 213 to 253 victory.  Our medalist at Mile Square was Chloe Kumpis with an amazing 2-over par 38.  Alexis Untalan came in with a 42, Anh Bui (with another chip-in birdie) 43, Aleyna Doche 43 and Megan Romero 47.

Thursday

Varsity hosted Edison at THC for the third Edison match up in a week's time.  Even though Edison was missing their #1 player, it wouldn’t have mattered, as co-medalists Samantha Trani and Kayla Nguyen led the field with even par 36’s. Sam bookended her round with birdies on 1 and 9. Annika Wang turned in a 41, Sophie Thibodeau 42 and Ady Ginter 45, for a 200 to 223 victory.

Way to go, Oilers!!!  Let’s go for another sweep. League matches start next week.

Week of 9/11/23

The Oilers were busy but strong this week!

Monday 9/11 our Varsity girls visited Newport Country Club to play against Corona Del Mar. What a treat to play a course the pros play each year. The day belonged to the Oilers, with a team score of 201 to CDM's 239 and some stellar play by medalist Kayla Nguyen with a one under par 35. Nicely done, Kayla! Our five top scores were Kayla Nguyen 35, Samantha Trani 38, Chloe Kumpis 42, Annika Wang 43 and Sophie Thibodeau 43.

Meanwhile, the Junior Varsity Oilers lost another close match to Mater Dei at David L. Baker, 202-196. Medalist Lizzie Rodriguez turned in a 6 over 37, with Alexis Untalan at 40, Anh Bui at 41 and Devonne Nguyen and Madelyn Untalan, both with 42s, contributing as well.

Varsity took on Newport Harbor Tuesday 9/12 at Costa Mesa Country Club’s Los Lagos, the shorter of the two courses. Led by medalist Annika Wang’s 37, the Oilers pulled off a commanding victory of 200 to 232 in some difficult conditions. The rough was crazy thick and extremely difficult.  Hitting fairways was key on this day. Unbeknownst to us, the format changed a bit from prior years. Newport's coach counted 5 out of 7 scores dropping off our 8th player which was Briana Lee with a 41. Counting scores for this match were Annika Wang 37, Kayla Nguyen 38, Samantha Trani 41, Sophie Thibodeau 42, and Marina Kelly 42.

On Thursday 9/14, our JV players rallied against Corona Del Mar on Meadowlark’s front nine. The coaches agreed to keep 5 scores out of 8 players. In the end Corona Del Mar had no chance being defeated by 87 strokes, Oilers 215 to CDM 302. Alexis Untalan lipped out an eagle putt on hole 8 for a tap-in birdie, finishing as medalist with a round of 40, followed by Anh Bui 41, Lizzie Rodriguez 43, Devonne Nguyen 44 and Madelyn Untalan 47. Great job, girls.

Week of 9/5/23

All levels were in action on Monday, 9/5. Varsity played another match against Santa Margarita, but unfortunately, home field did not prove to be an advantage. The reigning champs took the match 175-208 at The Huntington Club, which is playing especially tough right now. Kayla Nguyen medaled with a 39, followed by Marina Kelly 41, co-captain Samantha Trani 42, and sophomores Chloe Kumpis and Sophie Thibodeau with a pair of 43s.

JV lost a very close match to Mater Dei at Meadowlark, 227-223. Solid play was turned in by the entire team, led by medalist Kayla Bui with a 44, Anh Bui 45, and Abby Kerwin, Devonne Nguyen, Lizzie Rodriguez and Megan Romero all with 46s.

On Wednesday 9/6, Varsity was back at The Huntington Club, with the Oilers taking the match from Glendora HS, 221-240. Senior co-captain Annika Wang led the way with a 41. Other scores leading to the Oiler victory included Kalya Nguyen 43, Samantha Trani 45, Briana Lee 46 and Sophie Thibodeau 46.

Varsity capped the week on Thursday with another win, this time with the team traveling to Glendora to complete the home and home against Glendora HS. The girls were once again victorious, 208-236, with terrific play by senior co-captain Samantha Trani - turning in a one over 37! Sam was supported by Kayla Nguyen 39, Annika Wang 42, Sophie Thibodeau 43, and both Ady Ginter and Chloe Kumpis turning in 47s.

Week of 8/28/23

Varsity took on a familiar opponent Tuesday 8/29 at the Huntington Club against Long Beach Wilson, who are always ready to compete.  The Oilers looked comfortable at home and played very well with three scores coming in under 40, taking the victory 199-237.

The medal winner for the match was freshman Kayla Nguyen with a 1 over par 37. Congrats on your first medal, Kayla! Samantha Trani and Sophie Thibodeau followed with solid 39s. Annika Wang came in the 4th spot with a 40 and freshman Marina Kelly had a 42.

Lower levels competed in a two-girl scramble over at Meadowlark. Morgan Drotter and Bella Greene took the win, with a 1 under par 35.

Scores:

Morgan Drotter & Bella Greene 35

Alexis Untalan & Madelyn Untalan 36

Elaina Mack & Anh Bui 39

Aleyna Doche & Karina Shehadeh 40

Devonne Nguyen & Charlotte Hart 41

Rylee Stern & Kayla Bui 42

Lizzie Rodriguez & Kiera Bolt 43

Week of 8/21/23

Varsity's season opener against Santa Margarita on Tuesday 8/22 was canceled due to wet conditions at The Huntington Club following Hurricane Hilary. JV kicked off our season instead, with the first match of the year against Santa Margarita at Meadowlark GC - also still a little wet following the storm. HB took the loss to a very good Santa Margarita JV program, 220-235. Medalist for the day was freshman newcomer Alexis Untalan with a 41.

All three teams were in action on Thursday 8/24. HB Varsity traveled to Coto De Caza for a match against the reigning California State and CIF Champs, Santa Margarita.  This team is stacked and should make another run at a CIF Championship this year.  They beat the Oilers 176-210 shooting an impressive 4 under with their top 5 scores combined. Medalist for the Oilers was Annika Wang with a 38, followed by Kayla Nguyen 41, Samantha Trani 42, Marina Kelly 44 and a cluster of girls at 45.

HB JV also played Santa Margarita at Tijeras Creek.  Santa Margarita is pretty talented at all levels and beat HB 214-231. JV Medalist was Kayla Bui with a 42, Anh Bui 45, Aleyna Doche 47, Lizzie Rodriguez 48, and Megan Romero 49.

Frosh/Soph hosted Mater Dei at Meadowlark.  The girls battled but fell short 172-190.

Oiler Open

The 9th annual Oiler Open took place Tuesday, 8/15 at The Huntington Club in tough, windy conditions.

Congratulations to Annika Wang, securing her second Oiler Open victory in 3 years with a score of 39!

Congrats also to all the girls that qualified and played.
