Monday, November 4

The Oilers qualified for CIF Division 2 Team Championships, which took place Monday 11/4 at River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard. Our team of six made the trek for an 8am shotgun start - Annika Wang, Sophie Thibodeau, Chloe Kumpis, Megan Romero, Lizzie Rodriguez and Ealyn Wang.

We finished the regular season ranked #32 out of 258 in our section heading into playoffs. Congratulations on an exceptional season overall and a well-deserved place among the top teams!

Week of October 28

CIF-SS Southern Individual Regional took place Wednesday 10/30 at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills. While we played well on a relatively unknown golf course, the Oilers were unable to proceed to the next stage of individual matches. The top 24 of 113 players advanced, and in a heartbreaker of an ending both Annika Wang and Ealyn Wang finished at +4, tied for 25thTo give you an idea of the level of play, the top 16 golfers were even par or better; the lowest score was an insane 8 under 66 by Orange Lutheran’s Jude Lee.

Congratulations are nevertheless in order as this is the first time the Oilers have had four athletes qualify for CIF Individual Playoffs in the history of the girls golf program - Ealyn Wang, Annika Wang, Sophie Thibodeau and Chloe Kumpis.  Great season, girls!

Week of October 21

Sunset Conference Individual Playoffs took place this week with back-to-back 18-hole tournaments. On Tuesday 10/22, a squad of seven Oilers traveled to Dad Miller in Anaheim. Congratulations to Annika Wang (77), Ealyn Wang (79), Sophie Thibodeau (80) and Chloe Kumpis (84) who all made the cut against a tough field! These four moved on to League Finals Wednesday 10/23 at Costa Mesa Country Club's Mesa Linda course. Our girls stepped up with excellent rounds - Ealyn at -2 for the day with an eagle on the back nine, Annika +5, while Sophie and Chloe both shot +7.  All four land in the top 12 and advance to CIF next week.

On Thursday 10/24, our JV squad made the trek to Birch Hills on Thursday to defend our title at the Jerry Cowgill Invitational. Not only did we snap up longest drive (Alexis Untalan/34), closest to the pin (Madelyn Untalan/36) and 2nd place low gross (Abbi Kerwin/32), our first team (these three plus Anh Bui/39) secured first place overall. Team Two consisted of Charlotte Hart 50, Karina Shehadeh 47, Elaina Mack 46 and Sienna Shortle 34. Notable mention here, Sienna had the long drive for a time and tied our second lowest score out of both teams. Great play, girls!

Congratulations are also in order to all our JV girls, who went undefeated in Surf league play, with only one loss against Sunset conference opponents, securing another JV league title. Terrific season, girls!

Week of October 14

Our final league matches were played Tuesday 10/15 by both teams against Los Alamitos. Varsity put up a good fight against top ranked Los Alamitos at The Huntington Club but came up a few strokes short of a win and league title, 6 to be exact. The Griffins' top 5 added up to 208 while the Oilers came in at 213.  Our top scores went to Madelyn Untalan 46, Sophie Thibodeau 43, Ealyn Wang & Chloe Kumpis with 42s and our medalist Annika Wang with a 40.

JV played the Griffins at David L. Baker besting them by 10 strokes 205 to 215.  Our top scores went to Mi Nguyen and Anh Bui with 44s, Abbi Kerwin 40, Sienna Shortle 39 with our medalist Alexis Untalan shooting a 38.

Week of October 7

Course conditions this time of year suffer due to overall course and green aerations making this crazy game even more difficult. But our Oilers endured and came out on top…mostly.

Tuesday 10/8 both teams took down Corona Del Mar High School. Varsity played at The Huntington Club after being closed for a week for aeration. The recently punched and sanded greens look surprisingly good, but were a bit fuzzy and slower than normal. 201 to 237 was the Oiler winning score. Our top 5 players were Madelyn Untalan and Kayla Bui both with 45’s, Annika Wang 38, Sophie Thibodeau 37 and medalist Ealyn Wang at even par 36.

JV sunk the Sea Kings as well at newly aerated David L. Baker. The bumpy greens didn’t slow us down with a stellar 175 to 189 win. Our top 5 scores included triple threat Alexis Untalan, Mi Nguyen and Abbi Kerwin who all shot 36, Sienna Shortle 34 and our medalist Anh Bui with a 2 over 33. Great play, girls!

Wednesday 10/9 was a nail biter against Fountain Valley High at the David L Baker minefield, where there wasn’t a straight putt on the course.  At any rate, the Barons fell to the Varsity Oilers in our closest match in a long time, 178 to 182. Our top 5 were Megan Romero 38, Chloe Kumpis and Annika Wang at 36, Ealyn Wang 35 and medalist Sophie Thibodeau with a two over 33.

On Thursday 10/10, Varsity traveled to Tijeras Creek to battle top seeded Santa Margarita. The Oilers knew going into this it would be a tough day.  Half of our players had never played The Creek, but they all pulled through with very respectable scores. Unfortunately, Santa Margarita was triumphant with a score of 176 to our 209. For perspective on SM’s scoring ability, their #7 player finished 1 under. Our top 5 were Kayla Bui 45, Chloe Kumpis and Sophie Thibodeau 43, with medalists Annika Wang and Ealyn Wang sharing 39’s. Great play, girls.

Week of September 30

Things started off with a long drive to the 18-hole Ayala Fall Classic at Western Hills Country Club located in hot and sweaty Chino, California. Our Varsity Oilers did very well placing 6th overall with a score of 423 strokes, only 13 strokes away from 3rd place. Our 18-hole low score was Sophie Thibodeau with a score of 80, with solid play from the rest of team: Chloe Kumpis 82, Ealyn Wang 83 and Annika Wang 84.

The rest of the week was a sweep for the Oilers going undefeated in three matches. On Tuesday 10/1, Varsity stepped up to the tee box against Newport Harbor at Costa Mesa Country Club, Mesa Linda course taking them down with a score of 189 to 221. Our top 5 scores went to Chloe Kumpis 42, Lizzie Rodriquez 40, Annika Wang and Ealyn Wang 36 and with our team's lowest score for the second day in a row, medalist Sophie Thibodeau with a score of 35.

Wednesday 10/2, Marina tried their best, but it wasn’t quite good enough as the JV Oilers took the match 204 to 290. We had a couple firsts on the recently aerated greens. Rylee Stern turned in her best tournament round of 49. Our top 5 scores: Anh Bui turned in a 46, Alexis Untalan 42, Abbi Kerwin 41, Sienna Shortle 39, and our medalist Mady Untalan with her lowest Meadowlark tournament round, even par 36.

Thursday 10/3 was another good day for the Oilers, sinking the Vikings for the second day in a row. The Varsity girls bested Marina by 28 strokes 197 to 225. Our top 5 went to Ealyn Wang 41, Sophie Thibodeau 40, Annika Wang & Chloe Kumpis both 39, and our medalist, filling in for Megan Romero, Mady Untalan with a 2 over 38.

Week of September 23

Our JV team started the week off on 9/23, taking down the Mater Dei Monarchs., who didn’t have a chance at the par 31 David L Baker course. With an overall score of 188 to 201, our top performers were Karina Shehadeh 41, Abbi Kerwin and Anh Bui 39, Alexis Untalan 35, and our medalist Madelyn Untalan with a 3 over 34.

Wednesday 9/25 JV was a different story.  Our regular victories against Edison came to a disappointing end at the Baker short course 194 to 200.  Wednesday's top scores went to Charlotte Hart 44, Karina Shehadeh 42, Anh Bui 40, Madelyn Untalan 39 and our medalist Alexis Untalan with a great score of 35.

On Thursday 9/26, Varsity turned things around against Edison with a stellar victory 208 to 250 on a breezy day at The Huntington Club. Even though the wind was consistent our girls played well, with all 8 players within 5 strokes of each other. Team play at its best. Chloe Kumpis ended her round with a 44, Megan Romero 43, Sophie Thibodeau 41 and again medalists the sisters Annika Wang and Ealyn Wang both with 4 over 40’s.

Week of September 16

Varsity started us off on Monday 9/16 at the Rainbow Sandals Lady Triton Invitational, an 18 hole tournament. The Oilers did well against the best teams in Southern California finishing 7th of 17 teams. First place Rancho Santa Margarita’s five player average score was only 8 tenths of a stroke above par for 18 holes.  Our players ranked as follows: Devonne Nguyen 92, Chloe Kumpis 84, Ealyn Wang 83 and Annika Wang and Sophie Thibodeau shooting 81’s. Big congrats to Sophie with a back to back eagle/birdie combo.

Tuesday 9/17 Varsity took on Fountain Valley clobbering them by 40 strokes, 204 to 244. Top scores go to Kayla Bui and Lizzie Rodriguez 43, Chloe Kumpis 42, Sophie Thibodeau 41 and sharing the medalist position, the sisters Annika Wang and Ealyn Wang, both shooting 39.

Down the street and around the corner the same day JV took on a SoCal powerhouse, Santa Margarita. The Oilers played very well losing by only 12 strokes overall 201 to 213. Be proud girls, great play! Top scorers were Mi Nguyen and Sienna Shortle 45, Alexis Untalan and Abbi Kerwin 43, Madelyn Untalan 42 and our medalist Anh Bui stealing the show with a 40.

Wednesday 9/19 both Varsity and JV battled highly ranked Los Alamitos at Old Ranch Country Club. Unfortunately, the greens at Old Ranch are in terrible shape making an away match against a top team difficult. Bumpy greens and all, Varsity did well overall losing 192 to 209 against the Griffins. Our top scores went to Kayla Bui 46, Chloe Kumpis 43, Ealyn Wang 42, Sophie Thibodeau 41 with top honors going to Annika Wang with a 1 over 37.

Over at Meadowlark, JV wallopped the Griffins by 41 strokes, 219 to 260. Our top scores went to Karina Shehadeh 47, Sienna Shortle 46, Anh Bui & Alexis Untalan 43 and our medalist Abbi Kerwin with a 4 over 40. Great play, Abbi!

Week of September 9

Varsity met up with Corona Del Mar at Newport Country Club on Monday 9/9, beating the Sea Kings 206 to 224. Top scores were Megan Romero 46, Sophie Thibodeau 44, Ealyn Wang and Chloe Kumpis with 41’s, and our medalist Annika Wang with a blistering team season low of 2 under par 34. Insane, Annika, great job!  Pretty cool note, half of our team birdied the par five 5th hole, missing eagle putts by inches.

In our first Surf League match on Tuesday 9/10, Varsity roasted Marina at The Huntington Club with a score of 199 to 232. Our top scores this day included Megan Romero 43, Sophie Thibodeau 41, Lizzie Rodriguez 40, Annika Wang 38 and our medalist Ealyn Wang posting a two birdie, 1 over round of 37. Mind you this was no easy task in the afternoon wind. Great play, girls!

JV started their week Tuesday 9/10 at the par 32 Navy short course against Marina High. With a score of 239 to 300, our Oilers were triumphant against the Vikings. Our top scores went to Alexis Untalan 44, Abbi Kerwin and Mi Nguyen 38, with Madelyn Untalan and Anh Bui both scoring 37.

Wednesday 9/11 JV traveled 45 minutes away to Tijeras Creek Golf Course. Only two of our team members had ever seen this course before. For those that don’t know, it’s like playing a private club and is pretty difficult. With that said, the Oilers had seven players and were taken down by Santa Margarita with a score of 258 to 205.  Santa Margarita is seeded number 2 in So Cal right now and 205 strokes rivals most varsity scores.  Yet the Oilers, as they always do, marched on with top scores going to Rylee Stern 57, Karina Shehadeh 54, Abbi Kerwin 51, Alexis Untalan 50 and our medalist Madelyn Untalan with a 46. Notable shot of the day was Mady driving the green on #2…it was only 280 yards…Yowza!

Thursday 9/12 JV was back in familiar territory at Meadowlark against Corona Del Mar. The Sea Kings were no match for the Oilers with scores of 212 to 259.  Our top scores were Anh Bui and Mi Nguyen 45, Alexis Untalan 44, Abbi Kerwin 40 and a stellar 2 over 38 for our, yet again, medalist Madelyn Untalan. Notables were Mady’s birdie on #6 and Abbi’s birdie on #4, a very difficult par 3.

Thursday, September 5

The Varsity Oilers took on Newport Harbor High and completely took the wind out of their sails. The Newport Sailors were bested by 35 strokes at The Huntington Club, Oilers 199 to Newport’s 234. Top 5 of 7 scores counted for this match - Devonne Nguyen 44, Megan Romero 43, Sophie Thibodeau 39, Annika Wang 37 and an even par 36 for our medalist Ealyn Wang. Our 8th player Lizzie Rodriguez posted a 43. Crazy good scores, be proud girls.

Tuesday, September 3

Varsity took on the Edison Chargers at Costa Mesa Country Club’s Mesa Linda course.  The Oil slick proved too much for Edison, taking them down by 26 strokes, 197 to 223. Our top scores were held by Devonne Nguyen/Kayla Bui (both with scores of 40) and a medalist trio of 39’s by Sophie Thibodeau, Annika Wang and Ealyn Wang.

Over at the Lark (Meadowlark, that is), Coach Jeff continued the Oilers success leading the JV team to victory against Edison by 22 strokes, Oilers 219, Chargers 241.  With JV we used all 8 players for the best 5 scores. Anh Bui shot a 47, Alexis Untalan 44, Abbi Kerwin and Sienna Shortle both had 43’s and our medalist Madelyn Untalan brought home a 42.

Wednesday, August 28

Varsity matched against Santa Margarita, again on the back nine at the Huntington Club, where Santa Margarita was successful against the Oilers, 187 to 223. Santa Margarita has some of the best players in California and are always fierce, consistent competitors.  To give you an idea, their top 5 players combined score, on 9 holes they probably have never seen, was only 7 over par with one player at even par 36. Playing against players this accomplished is difficult on the mental side of things but it will only make us tougher in the end. Success is in our future! Rounding out our nine-hole scores are Megan Romero 52, Chloe Kumpis and Ealyn Wang sharing a 44, Sophie Thibodeau 43 and our medalist Annika Wang with a 4 over 40.

The JV Oilers played their second match against Mater Dei at the par 31 David L. Baker course. JV took the Monarchs down with a score of 187 to 200.  Our top 5 scores were Karina Shehadeh 41, Alexis Untalan 39, Abbi Kerwin 38, Anh Bui 37, and our medalist Madelyn Untalan with a 3 birdie one over 32…wow! Great play, girls.

Honorable mentions this week go to Sienna Shortle and Mi Nguyen who both scored birdies in their first high school match.  Congratulations, not everyone does that!

Tuesday, August 27

JV started things out at the par 36 Meadowlark Golf Course against Mater Dei. While our JV team has the talent, Mater Dei took us down by a margin of only 9 strokes, 216 to 225. We had four players sharing scores in the top five places. Karina Shehadeh and Sienna Shortle at 50, Anh Bui 45, Abbi Kerwin 44, with our top spot being shared by the twins Alexis Untalan and Madelyn Untalan at 43.

Thursday, August 22

The 12th Annual Oiler Open kicked off the 2024 season at The Huntington Club with 14 of our 18 players making the day. The girls started on #10 on a breezy, HOT afternoon in Surf City. The back nine start isn't usually on the menu, but with new management at THC we may see more of it. It plays a little tougher than the front, but in our humble opinion features the best holes on the course.

Top Scores:

  • Winner: Ealyn Wang (39)
  • Sophie Thibodeau (43)
  • Chloe Kumpis/Annika Wang (45)
