2025 Recaps

Week of 10/6

Our Sunset League dominance continued against Marina on Tuesday with both teams and a pizza party. Varsity led our team off at Meadowlark with a 198-222 win. Ealyn Wang continued her medalist run with a 38 and Morgan Stouffer close behind with a 39. Mady Untalan and team captain Chloe Kumpis both finished with 40 strokes while Lexi Untalan rounded out the top 5 with a 41.

JV obliterated the Vikings with a 230 to 272 win. Both Sienna Shortle and Megan Luong turned in the best scores of 44. Mi Nguyen came in with a 46, while Lily Miyagishima and Madison Luong both carded 48s. Great play, girls!

Wednesday was a bit of a different story with JV traveling to Oso Creek to take on one of California’s best high school teams, Santa Margarita. Small greens and a funky layout took their toll on our girls as they suffered their biggest loss of the season 177-232.  Santa Margarita took home course advantage, with their top five scores ranging from 32 to 38.

Week of 9/29

Varsity traveled to Western Hills Country Club to play the Ayala Classic 18-hole tournament. Out of 20 teams, playing a very hilly course, Our Oilers finished an outstanding 9th place ahead of Edison, Mission Viejo, and J Serra, among others.  Ealyn Wang was our medalist shooting a 78.  Chloe Kumpis and Marina Pejakovic both shot 89, Lexi Untalan 92 and Morgan Stouffer 95.

JV played Laguna Beach Varsity in a non-league match at The Ranch (Ben Brown’s). Our medalist on this day was Mi Nguyen shooting a 43. Second spot went to Megan Luong 45, third Madison Luong 47, Anh Bui 48 and Sophia Ruelaz 49.

Varsity played Edison at THC with a 201 – 234 win. Morgan Stouffer was our medalist with an outstanding one under 35. Ealyn wasn’t far behind shooting 38.  Marina came in at 41, Lexy at 43 and Mady shooting a 44.

Unfortunately, JV wasn’t as lucky and was taken down by Edison 199 – 204.  We didn’t play our best, and Edison had a one foot putt for eagle on the par 4 fourth hole. Our medalist for the second time this week was Mi with a 38.  Our second play score goes to Sienna Shortle 39. Not far behind was Anh 41, Madison 42 and Lily Miagishima shooting a 44.

Wednesday was a Stranger Things kind of a day. Our Varsity team was en route to Costa Mesa Country Club when the match was suddenly cancelled. This kerfuffle between the Oilers and Sailors goes back to last season’s final Sunset League match. Unfortunately, it reared its ugly head again at THC this season.  Consequently, the match was postponed, and the five best scores from each team on the first nine holes of the Sunset League final at Dad Miller Golf Course will count as our HB vs NH match. We turned lemons into lemonade and headed to THC for a fun best ball Varsity/Coach match. Two teams of four tied at 3 under just like at Meadowlark last week. We love our consistency!

Thursday kept the weirdness going on the JV level when we thought Newport Harbor was a no-show.  Come to find out, they don’t even have a JV team, oops. At any rate, we had a great time playing a team match on newly punched greens. Sienna was our top player shooting a 41. Lily 45, Mi 46 with Luong twins tied at 48.

Week of 9/22

On Monday 9/22, Varsity traveled to the McCabe Classic 18-hole Invitational. Our Oilers finished in position 2 of 11 teams, with a 397 stroke total trailing Diamond Bar by 5 strokes and beating out Corona Del Mar by 1 stroke. Ealyn Wang churned out a three over 73 to earn another medalist honor, great job. Morgan Stouffer close behind with a 75, Chloe Kumpis 80, Marina Pejakovic 82 and Mady Untalan with an 87 to make our top 5.

Meanwhile, JV took on the best team in Southern California, Santa Margarita. While we did not take the win, we did end up closer than in the past with a 235 – 209 loss. Megan Romero was our medalist with a fourteen-putt 41. That’s five one-putts. Anh Bui was 6 strokes back with a 47, Lily Miyagishima 48, Madison Luong 49 and Sienna Shortle 50.

Tuesday's Sunset League matches against were Los Alamitos. Both Varsity and JV tarred the Griffins’ feathers winning both matches. Varsity played at Old Ranch County Club taking a 209 – 224 win. Again, Ealyn Wang was our medalist with a two over 38.  Morgan Stouffer and Lexi Untalan shared 41s and Marina Pejakovic had a 42.  Devonne Nguyen and Mady Untalan shared 47s closing our top five results.

JV at Meadowlark took a commanding 223 – 263 win against Los Alamitos.  Sienna Shortle was our top score today with a 41 nearly eagling #8.  Anh Bui and Megan Luong shot a pair of 44s, Lily Miyagishima 46 and Sophia Ruelaz 48.  Megan Luong crushed her previous match by 9 strokes and this was Sophia Ruelaz’s first round in the 40s at Meadowlark.

On Wednesday, Varsity took on the Santa Margarita Eagles at THC. While the Eagles soared above us with a 201-213 win, our Oilers kept themselves in the game. A twelve stroke differential against this stalwart team is quite respectable. Our medalist yet again, Ealyn Wang with a 40, Morgan Stouffer 42, Marina Pejakovic 43 and Chloe Kumpis, Lexi Untalan and Mady Untalan all with 44s.

Thursday practice was a blended team best ball tournament. Each of our 4 teams finished under par with three of them tied at a three under 33.  Our winners after a putt off were Lexi Untalan, Lily Miyagishima, Mi Nguyen and Madison Luong.

Week of 9/15

Monday 9/15 kicked off early with Varsity at the Rainbow Sandals Invitaitonal 18-hole tournament.  We finished 7th out of 19 schools - outstanding! Our team medalist was sophomore co-captain Ealyn Wang with a 79. Senior Captain Chloe Kumpis was close behind with an 81, and freshman Morgan Stouffer with an 84. Closing our top five are juniors Lexi Untalan and Marina Pejakovic both shooting 86.

On Tuesday 9/16, both teams battled against Sunset League rival Corona Del Mar. Our Oilers sent the Sea Kings home 185 – 202, with Morgan Stouffer in position 1 draining 3 birdies for a 1 under par 34. Ealyn Wang was one stroke off with her 3 birdie, even par 35.  Marina Pejakovic was a stroke behind Ealyn with a 2 birdie 36.  Lexi and Chloe weren’t far behind scoring 39 and 41, respectively.

JV handily took down Corona Del Mar at Meadowlark 231 - 267.  This would be the first of Megan Romero’s medalist scores this week shooting a 40.  Lily Miyagishima came in second with a 46. Anh Bui and Sienna Shortle both scored 48, and Mi Nguyen logged a 49. Freshman Sophia Ruelaz scored her first birdie on #8 par 4.

Wednesday 9/17 was a strange weather day. Things started hot then quickly turned cold and windy. Chilly and windy or not, our Oilers showed up with a mission in mind. Varsity had a close match but still managed to beat the Barons 217 – 221. Even in tough conditions, Ealyn Wang was able to squeak out a 2 over 38 for her second medalist round this week. Chloe Kumpis wasn’t far behind with a 41, Morgan Stouffer 44, while Mady Untalan and Lexi Untalan both scored 47’s.

JV also took down Fountain Valley at David L Baker, 187 – 217. Megan Romero took top honors with a one over 33. Anh Bui was close behind with a 34, Sienna Shortle 37, Megan Luong 41 and Lily Miyagishima 42.  Great play, girls.

On Thursday 9/18, Varsity played their 4th round in a week at the historic Ben Brown’s Golf Course in South Laguna. The Laguna Breakers couldn’t muster up a wave big enough to get close losing by 59 strokes, 180 – 239.  Ealyn Wang, with her third medalist effort this week, scored a one over 33. Chloe Kumpis was a close second shooting 34. Marina Pejakovic came in at 36, Morgan Stouffer 38 and Mady Untalan 39.

Week of 9/8

A successful first complete week of play! Our Sunset League matches went well and both Varsity and JV are still undefeated in league play.  Unfortunately, non-league matches proved to be more difficult against Mater Dei. Mater Dei’s JV team is more like a Varsity team.

We played our second Varsity Sunset League match on Tuesday 9/9/ against Newport Harbor at The Huntington Club. NH sank with a 228 – 200 loss to our Oilers. Ealyn Wang, our medalist, had an extremely difficult round yet managed to grind out a one over 37. Morgan Stouffer followed with a 39, Mady Untalan 40, Chloe Kumpis, Lexi Untalan, Marina Pejakovic all shooting 42.  Great play, girls.

Meanwhile, JV took on Mater Dei at David L Baker but fell to the Monarchs, 188 to 203. Lily Miyagishima pulled off her first time medalist round shooting 38, followed by Sienna Shortle 40, Anh Bui 41, Mi Nguyen 41 and Megan Romero 43. Those are some pretty decent scores, girls.

Special mention to Anh with a 90 yard hole out for an eagle on the par 4 #2.

Wednesday 9/10, Varsity took on the Mater Dei Monarchs at Mile Square. Our Oilers battled hard and lost by only 8 strokes, 180 to 188. Ealyn shot a blistering 3 under 33 to become a two-time medalist this week. Other stellar scores include Marina Pejakovic even par 36, Morgan Stouffer 39, Mady Untalan and Lexi Untalan, both shooting 40.

Thursday 9/11 brought us back to Sunset League Play against the Marina Vikings at The Huntington Club.  The Vikings found themselves unsuccessful against our mighty Oilers. Varsity took them down 197 to 225. Ealyn Wang pulled the trifecta as our 3-time medalist shooting an even par 36. Morgan Stouffer came in with a one-over 37, Marina Pejakovic 39, Lexi Untalan 40 and Chloe Kumpis 45.

JV also played Marina at the Navy Cruiser short course, and won by a 57 stroke margin, 196 to 253. Megan Romero was our medalist with a solid two-birdie 34. Eagle queen Anh Bui shot a 39, Lily Miyagishima 40, Mi Nguyen 41 and Sienna Shortle 42.

Great job, girls!

Sophomore co-captain Ealyn Wang birdied two of her last three holes, freshman Morgan Stouffer birdied 2 of her first 4 holes and junior Mady Untalan birdied #4, all posting a one over 37. Other top scores included Marina Pejakovic 41 and Lexi Untalan 42.

Due to time constraints, we counted 6 holes for the match and beat the Chargers 270 to 280.  Anh Bui came away with top honors with a 2 over 27 and a birdie on the par 5 number 4. Our other top scores came from Megan Romero and Sienna Shortle with 31s, Lily Miyagishima 32, Elaina Mack 33 and Megan Luong with a 35.  Special mention goes out to Natasha Stein for a 25-yard chip in on over a green side bunker on #6.
